Sumi-e, a journey of ink and paper

Version française

Ink and paper: these two can be found together in many parts of the world. In Japan, it is called Sumi-e – literally ‘black ink painting’. The technique, which originated in China in the 8th century, dominated artistic practice in Japan from the 14th to the 16th centuries.

In 2025, it can be found in a living form at the O Museum of Art in Tokyo (Osaki district), where Group82 organised its annual exhibition. Nature and landscape, the traditional themes of sumi-e, are still very much present, but Mamiko Takamoto‘s surprising formal experiments give an idea of the revival of the practice.
